The Band
Formed in Dallas, Texas
S.H.I.V. (Self-Honed Instrument of Violence) is a band from Dallas, TX that combines the crushing riffs of old school death metal and classic hardcore with the dark philosophical weight of Fyodor Dostoevsky's writing. Forged with the intent of pushing extreme music into deeper territory, the band channels themes of despair, morality, and the human condition into a relentless wall of sound.
In 2023 S.H.I.V. released their debut 6-song EP The Only Way to Escape Is to Die, a raw and uncompromising statement that quickly carved their place in the underground. Original members Craig Meinhart (vocals), John Tapia (guitar), and David Cruz (drums) have been joined by Ryan Forist (bass) and Krishna Peri (guitar) to round out the sound and push the intensity with renewed force.
With a sound that's equal parts feral energy and suffocating heaviness, S.H.I.V. continues to cut their own path: brutal, unflinching, and unafraid to stare into the abyss.
The Only Way to Escape Is to Die was recorded and mixed at Nomad Recording Studio by Russell Hollar and mastered by Gary Long. Released in 2023, it features artwork by world renowned photographer Valerio Bispuri from his book ENCERRADOS, featuring stark black and white pictures of prison life from around the world.
The imagery marries perfectly with the lyrical themes of despair, fate, and the weight of human suffering, all delivered through pummeling riffs, violent grooves, and unrelenting vocals. The EP features six tracks of suffocating hardcore death that drags the listener into a bleak psychological landscape.
It's not just heavy for the sake of being heavy. It's a philosophical assault set to music, where every breakdown and blast beat feels like a confrontation with the darkest depths of the human soul.
